How to Break Your Facebook Addiction

Facebook is a profound phenomenon in our country. We know that over half of Americans have Facebook accounts. We also know that people are having problems in their lives as a result of them.

Facebook addiction comes into play when a person is spending an enormous amount of time on their Facebook account. When it consumes all of their thoughts. When it consumes an extraordinary amount of their time. As a result of that, they’re having negative consequences in their life.

A Facebook addiction is similar, it falls into the realm of what we call behavioral addictions. So somebody is not addicted to a substance, they’re not putting something into their body, but they’re engaged in a process. So with Facebook, they’re engaged in the process of seeing what their friends are doing, updating their account as to what is going on, and it becomes very addictive because people get absorbed in that.

A way to address that is to become mindful of your Facebook use, and the way to do that is to keep a log. Take a week and log down the amount of time that you’re spending, each and every week, on your Facebook account. And then you become more mindful of the time that you’re spending on it. If you find that you’re spending more time than you would like to spend in it, then you can begin to create some boundaries around your use. A good example of that is, “I’ll check my Facebook account one hour in the morning, and one hour in the evening.” Those are ways that you can contain your use.

Another way to address an addiction that you may have with your Facebook is to team up with a buddy, somebody who’s also concerned about their Facebook use, and come to an agreement together that you will agree to limit the amount of time that you spend on your Facebook account.

So the Facebook does not control your life, but you’re controlling the amount of time you spend on it.
